Charles Pugh, a TV reporter turned politician, made history in 2009 as the first openly gay elected official in the city of Detroit. In an overwhelming show of support, Pugh won a seat onto Detroit city council and replaced Cockrel as council president.
Born and raised in Detroit, Pugh rose up from what some might call insurmountable circumstances. Pugh’s mother was murdered when he was only 3 years old. Four years later, Pugh’s father committed suicide when he shot himself in the head just across the hall from Charles’ bedroom, leaving him to make a 911 call no child should ever have to make. Raised by his grandmother, Pugh went on to become an honor student in high school and eventually left Detroit to attend the University of Missouri on a journalism scholarship. He did a stint as a reporter in Virginia and Indiana before returning to his hometown to join the Detroit Fox 2 News team.

Being an international superstar isn’t all glitz and glamor. There’s a lot of tireless promotion involved. R&B singer Alicia Keys can attest to that. The singer was recently in Japan promoting her new album, “The Element of Freedom.” Admittedly jet-lagged, Keys gave an interview followed by a performance of “Doesn’t Mean Anything” on the Japanese TV show Sukkiri. And while she tried to pull it together, she looked a bit overwhelmed by all the animated back and forth talk. Her faces were priceless.

Since the announced departure of American Idol judge Paula Abdul, there’s been never-ending speculation as to who will replace her. One of the names that has surfaced includes R&B singer Mary J. Blige. While it hasn’t been confirmed she will permanently take a seat at the judge’s table, she has been confirmed to join Idol judges as a guest judge at the Atlanta auditions.
The 9th season of American Idol will air January 2010.
