President Obama (my husband in my head) expanded his list of potential nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court to include Ann Claire Williams. Williams, a federal judge on the US 7th Circuit, would be the first African-American appointed to the Court. She is also the first African-American woman appointed to the 7th Circuit and the third African-American woman ever to serve on any United States Court of Appeals. It’s great to see Williams, Read the rest of this entry »

Charles Pugh, a TV reporter turned politician, made history in 2009 as the first openly gay elected official in the city of Detroit. In an overwhelming show of support, Pugh won a seat onto Detroit city council and replaced Cockrel as council president.
Born and raised in Detroit, Pugh rose up from what some might call insurmountable circumstances. Pugh’s mother was murdered when he was only 3 years old. Four years later, Pugh’s father committed suicide when he shot himself in the head just across the hall from Charles’ bedroom, leaving him to make a 911 call no child should ever have to make. Raised by his grandmother, Pugh went on to become an honor student in high school and eventually left Detroit to attend the University of Missouri on a journalism scholarship. He did a stint as a reporter in Virginia and Indiana before returning to his hometown to join the Detroit Fox 2 News team.
Pugh is known for being a very public and positive figure in the LGBT community. Unapologetically gay, Pugh Read the rest of this entry »

Wanda Sykes entertained President Obama and other guest last night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Sykes is the first African-American woman to perform jokes in the history of the event. And since Sykes came out as a lesbian late last year, I guess we can also add out lesbian to the list.
Celebrities also showed up for the dinner seeming to almost outnumber the correspondents. Celebs spotted included: Alicia Keys, Tyra Banks, Chris Tucker, Whoopi Goldberg, Eva Longoria, and The Rock just to name a few.
Check out video of Sykes performance and photos of celebrities spotted after the jump… Read the rest of this entry »

Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed legislation to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of categories covered under federal hate crime law. This, however, is only the first step. The legislation must now be passed by the Senate.
The legislation, titled The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, is a bill that would provide local police and sheriff’s departments with federal resources to combat hate violence.
This isn’t the first time this piece of legislation has made an appearance before Congress. The bill passed the House in 2007 but President Bush promised to veto it if it passed the Senate.
Fortunately, the current Administration has a different perspective on the matter.
Prior to the vote Wednesday morning, President Obama urged Congress to pass the bill.
President Obama made the following statement: Read the rest of this entry »

Obama says “yes we can” to the worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality.
According to the Associated Press, yesterday U.S. officials notified France, the sponsors of this measure, the U.S. will sign the United Nations declaration calling for the worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality.
The official, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated “the United States was concerned about ‘violence and human rights abuses against gay, lesbian, transsexual and bisexual individuals’ and was also ‘troubled by the criminalization of sexual orientation in many countries.’”
Some may see Obama’s support of this measure as baby steps in the fight for gay rights or a trivial gesture. Really haters?!?! Read the rest of this entry »
