(Provost pictured above)As if the facts and underlying motives of this heinous killing weren’t twisted enough, the Petty Officer suspected of killing Navy Seaman August Provost committed suicide Friday, July 31. Petty Officer Jonathan Campos, who was being held at Camp Pendelton on several charges for the alleged murder of openly gay Navy man Provost, choked himself with toilet paper. His official cause of death has been labeled self-inflicted asphyxiation.
A sad ending to a tragic story. So many questions are left unanswered. I hope family and friends will take solace in knowing so many people cared about what happened to August Provost and were not willing to let this matter be quietly swept under the carpet.
R.I.P. August Provost

*UPDATE* The Navy has released a statement via spokesman Brian O’Rourke indicating it will continue to investigate the killing of Seaman August Provost saying “the military owes answers to the family” of Provost. However, the Navy continues to hold on to the claim Campos did not target Provost for being gay.

Navy Seaman August Provost, 29, was brutally murdered at Camp Pendleton in California. Provost, who was openly gay, told his family he was being repeatedly harassed for being gay but was afraid to report it. On the morning of June 30, Provost was found shot multiple times, tied up and gagged inside the guard shack where he was on sentry duty; his guard shacked burned to cover up evidence. Provost was described as a “rising star” by a military spokesman. Navy officials are investigating the matter as a “possible” hate crime. Family and friends believe his sexuality was the motive behind this heinous killing.
The Navy has one sailor in custody who “has been linked to the commission of this crime through both physical evidence and his own statement,” according to Navy Captain Matt Brown.
About 100 people gathered along a busy road in Oceanside, CA Friday night (July 10) for a silent vigil in memory of Provost.
Check out video on the story and the family’s statement when you… Read the rest of this entry »
