How many of us can say we don’t know someone with HIV or AIDS? Those who don’t (or at least think they don’t), need kiss their lucky stars and pray that this epidemic never reaches their doorstep. Fortunately, we can do more than pray. We can take action to both help stop the spread of this disease and aid those who suffer from it.
The AIDS epidemic didn’t start yesterday. It started before many of us were born and despite all of the advances in technology and medicine, it still ravages our communities at increased rates.
This disease will only continue to spread unless we all do something. It’s not enough to know that someone else is fighting it. That attitude won’t cut it. We can stop the spread of HIV and AIDS by talking about it, remembering that it exists, and most importantly by protecting ourselves.

Co-founder of BET and the first African-American billionaire, Sheila Johnson, lent her efforts and her dollars to produce a documentary on the AIDS crisis in Washington, DC. The documentary, titled The Other City, premiered this week at The Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
The Other City “tells the unseen and unheard stories behind the epidemic in our nation’s capital. From a mother of three who has used her plight with government housing as motivation to campaign for reform, to a former drug addict now advocating for funding of needle exchange programs on Capitol Hill, to the self-described “privileged” young people volunteering at Joseph’s House shelter.”
During a recent interview Johnson did with journalist LLoyd Grove, she also touched on why she’s now ashamed of the network she created several decades ago and the role it might play in “making matters worse” in the spread of the disease. Read the rest of this entry »

“Hate has no place in the house of God. No one should be excluded from our love, our compassion or our concern because of race or gender, faith or ethnicity — or because of their sexual orientation.” Those were the words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu in a touching open letter, written by the Archbishop and posted in the Washington Post this past Friday (March 12). The letter urged Africa’s politicians and citizens to take a stand against the wrong of discrimination based on sexual orientation. Tutu categorized the recent acts including, the jailing of a Malawi couple who sought to get married, consideration of a Ugandan bill to make homosexuality punishable by life imprisonment and the exclusion of gay men for HIV treatment at a clinic in Kenya as “terrible backward steps for human rights in Africa.”

As more and more women become infected with H.I.V. in D.C., the city’s Health Department will begin handing out free female condoms wherever male condoms are handed out. According to reports, Washington D.C. has one of the highest H.I.V. infection rates in the U.S., with 3% of all adults and teenagers in the District infected with the virus.
While the female condom isn’t anything new, this version of it is, hopefully making its use more desirable by consumers. Proponents of the condom assert it is “softer, quieter and less expensive than the original.”
A half-million dollar grant from the M.A.C. Cosmetics company will fund the free distribution of Read the rest of this entry »
