Pop Star Nadja Benaissa Admits Sleeping With Ex-Lovers While Hiding She Has HIV

On August 16^th German pop star Nadja Benaissa of the group “No Angels” stood before a court in Darmstadt, Germany weeping. Nadja, once part of the biggest-selling German girl group to date, stands trial this week facing charges of aggravated assault due to allegations she had unprotected sex with her ex-lovers without informing any of them of her HIV status. Nadja, now 28, was told of her status at the tender age of 17 following a routine screening. Of the three men she’s said to had sex with between 2000 and 2004, one of them was infected with HIV and is proclaiming he contracted the disease from Nadja. Nadja was arrested last year and served ten days in jail.

In court Nadja admits keeping her status a secret because she feared losing her career. In a written court statement Nadja goes on to say:

“I was told that the chance of the infection breaking out in my case is almost zero… Same low is the risk (sic) that I could infect somebody else with HIV. That was the reason why I did not tell anybody at first because I did not want my daughter to be punished for my behaviour and my infection. I have never told the public before, because I have had fear that this would be the end for our band.”

Sounds like Miss Benaissa has a lot of explaining to do and her biggest fear has come to pass; ruining her career.

I know this is a very loaded issue, but I personally feel that if she was protecting herself and others (condoms, blah blah blah) she shouldn’t have to disclose her status to anyone.

What isn’t so great, is that she wasn’t protecting herself OR others and that was negligent on her part.

But folks also have to learn that you have to protect yourselves. The folks she slept with should have done a better job at that.

I am not in any way defending what she did, but I don’t think she is the only one to “blame”.

Folks with HIV get a bad wrap as it is and we should all be practicing positive prevention and not villifying people.

In this day and age you should always use a condom no matter what. Also the stigma of people living with hiv/aids has to stop.

Stigma’s are irrelevant when physical health is involved. There is no excuse that validates failing to inform a partner and condoms are not the answer due to the fact that they cannot eliminate 100% of the risk. It a very simple concept, if you have a disease that you are capable of passing along then you tell the other person.

When it comes to social political issues coming out of her closet early on probably would have been good for her career. He mangers would have made her a spokeswoman for HIV/AIDS causes, but instead she is an example of how not to use your fame and HIV status.
