Award-winning director Lee Daniels‘ newest project takes him to the steps of the White House. The Precious director has signed a deal to rewrite and direct a “The Butler,” a film that chronicles the life of Eugene Allen. Allen, an African-American butler that served the White House for 34 years and 8 presidents, passed away March 2010 of renal failure. Denzel Washington is said to be in talks for the lead role.
Despite playing a supporting role out of the spotlight of the media, Allen’s story has been told through a series of articles by Washington Post writer Wil Haygood.
Although he was a servant in the White House, Allen was certainly regarded as a friend to the presidents for which he worked. The article recounts several facts which really show you the kind of man Allen was in his life and his work. Truman called him Gene while Ford would talk golf with the man. And when tragedy struck in the form of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Allen was invited to the funeral. However, he declined to attend because, “someone had to be at the White House to serve everyone after they came from the funeral.” As a token of gratitude, Jackie Kennedy gave Allen one of JFK’s neckties which he has since had framed. This sounds like one respectable man and one hell of a role for Washington if he takes it. [Source]
Daniels’ follow-up project to Precious was originally supposed to be the biopic Selma about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. starring David Oyelowo as the lead role, along with Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, and Robert DeNiro. However, the project has been slow to get funding.
It’s obvious Daniels intends to build his reputation on making thoughtful films on profound figures and subject matters. Whether it’s Selma or The Butler, I’m eager to see what’s next.
