DeFarra Gaymon Update: Undercover Operation Suspended To “Make Some Adjustments”

Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura has temporarily suspended his department’s five-year undercover operation at Newark’s Branch Brook Park following the shooting death of Atlanta resident DeFarra Gaymon.

On July 16th, undercover detective Edward Esposito encountered Gaymon in the park late at night and according to the detective was propositioned for sex. Once he identified himself as an officer, Gaymon allegedly knocked Esposito to the ground and took off. Esposito then pursued Gaymon and when allegedly cornered by Gaymon, in “fear for his life,” Esposito fatally shot Gaymon in the chest.

“We’ve temporarily suspended the undercover operation there, but we’re increasing uniformed patrol at Branch Brook,” Fontoura said “It’s on hold for now. We’re looking to tweak it and make some adjustments.”

Essex authorities assert the undercover operation was launched following numerous complaints about the park space becoming a pickup spot for gay men.

Gay rights advocacy group, Garden State Equality, has gotten involved and demands the release of documents related to previous lewdness arrest made at Branch Brook since the launch of the operation. The group is concern LGBT “Targeting gay men or LGBT people specifically, or anyone perceived as such, is unconscionable – and as we strongly believe, illegal.”

If you don’t already know, New Jersey law enforcement authorities have a long history of coming under fire for its “profiling” of minority groups under the guise of “serving and protecting.”

Fontoura, however, stands by officer Esposito calling him “as honest as can be,” and asserts, “if we see illegal activity going on, we’re duty-bound to respond.”
