Air Force sergeant Jene Newsome is the latest victim of the discriminatory military policy Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. She was “honorably discharged” from the Air Force after police officers in her South Dakota town snitched on her to the military.

It all started back in November (2009) when Rapid City police officers sought Newsome’s cooperation in the arrest of her partner, Cheryl Hudson, who was wanted on theft charges in Fairbanks, Alaska. Newsome, an aircraft armament system craftsman, was at work at Ellsworth Air Force Base at the time and refused to leave work to help them find her partner. When Newsome finally arrived home, she found the officers, Jeremy Stauffacher and detective Tom Garinger, at her home along with Hudson. The officers informed Newsome they saw the couple’s Iowa marriage certificate on the kitchen table and “knew how the military worked.” The officers, obviously plagued by a case of bitchassness, reported Newsome’s sexual orientation to the Air Force base reasoning it was “relevant to the investigation because it showed both the relationship and residency of the two women.” Newsome, of course, was subsequently discharged. Not only is Newsome’s military career over but her retirement plan worth $500,000 is also gone.

Police Chief Steve Allender, upon investigation, concluded the officers acted appropriately. Last month, Newsome and the ACLU filed a complaint against the police department claiming violation of Newsome’s privacy rights.

This case further illustrates how insanely flawed and discriminatory this policy is when SOMEONE ELSE can out you and you’re still in violation of the policy. Honey, lesbehonest, chances are a large majority of women in the military are some sort of queer. Not generalizing but c’mon, we all know some. The fact these service men and women’s contribution to our country’s freedom and protection of its people is trivialized by dismissal based on sexual orientation is downright demoralizing. Every civilian who believes one these men or women should be discharged based on sexual orientation, I challenge you to sign up and take their place in the military. Oh, is that silence of inaction I hear? Thought so.
