It pleasures me to say, The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will honor openly gay comedienne/talk show host Wanda Sykes, and award-winning actress Drew Barrymore at its upcoming GLAAD Media Awards Ceremony.
Wanda Sykes will receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award which is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for our community. It was Sykes official coming out as a lesbian during a Prop 8 Stand Out for Equality rally in Las Vegas that placed her at the forefront as one of the LGBT community’s shining stars. The brave wife and mother also revealed at the same time she is legally married to her french partner, Alex and the proud parent of twins.
(TIDBIT)Previous Stephen F. Kolzak honorees include Rufus Wainwright, Melissa Etheridge, Bill Condon, Todd Haynes, Alan Ball, Ellen DeGeneres, and Sir Ian McKellen.

Acclaimed Actress, producer, and director Drew Barrymore will also be honored receiving the prestigious Vanguard Award presented to media professionals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Throughout her career, Barrymore has remained a supporter & ally of the LGBT community. The actress was one of the thousands who marched in Hollywood in in an effort to achieve equality after the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8. Drew Barrymore has stated:
“I think a woman and a woman together are beautiful, just as a man and a woman together are beautiful….I am who I am because of the people who influenced me growing up, and many of them were gay. No one has the right to tell anyone what makes a family… This is something that means everything to me.”
(TIDBIT) Past recipients include Charlize Theron, Antonio Banderas, Janet Jackson, Sharon Stone, Eric McCormack, Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli, Kathy Griffin and Whoopi Goldberg.
The 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards will take place April 17.
