Actor, model, and world-renowned drag performer Rupaul Andre Charles, better known as simply RuPaul, has been credited for bringing the art form of drag performance into mainstream acceptance. Born in San Diego, California, RuPaul gravitated to the arts and theater from the time he was in high school. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia when he was 16 years old and often claims “Hotlanta” as his home.

He started out in the business with a music group he called “RuPaul and the U-hauls.” He made the move from Atlanta to New York in his late twenties. After some stumbling blocks, RuPaul eventually got his footing and emerged as a glamorous drag performer, a change from his previous “punk drag” image. His new image garnered him much attention from the right people elevating him to the hot “new” act in town. RuPaul continued to work tirelessly to build up his reputation and image, which definitely paid off.

A few years later RuPaul inked a deal with Tommy Boy Records and on his 32nd birthday his single “Supermodel” was released. RuPaul went on to appear in a duet with Elton John, several films and became the “First Face of M.A.C.” makeup.

His list of contributions to our culture spans over twenty years and is still going. RuPaul is presently in his second season of hosting his own show on the MTV LOGO network called, “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
