Jason Mattison Jr. (L), Dante Parrish (R)
Baltimore high school student Jason Mattison Jr., age 15, was killed at the hands of a family friend, Dante Parrish, age 35. Jason was found raped, gagged with a pillowcase, stabbed repeatedly in the head and throat and stuffed into an upstairs closet at his aunt’s house, where Parrish may have been staying.
Jason, a self-confident gay teenager, was described as very popular, outgoing and friendly. All who knew him loved him. A sophomore at Vivian T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy in West Baltimore, his teachers and classmates are left heartbroken over his murder.
“He was a terrific boy, and we miss him very much, ” said Laquanna Couplin, Jason’s cousin and a resident at the house where Jason’s body was found. “We’re hoping that justice is served and that the person who is responsible for this goes to prison and doesn’t get out,” added Couplin. “He [Jason] was a sweet young man. He wasn’t afraid of who he was. He had a life ahead of him. I just wish he could’ve had a chance to live it.” Jason aspired to be a pediatrician.
Parrish, a convicted felon, was recently released from prison after serving 10 years of a 30 year sentence for second-degree murder. He was released after the Innocence Project found he pled guilty based on a faulty statement of facts read into the court record.
Parrish was picked up two days after the murder of Jason and admitted to the crime. He is currently charged with first-degree murder.

this is just SO sad….bless his heart, we have GOT to stop this violence! How can a person display SO MUCH HATE?!

This is a very sad story. I live here in Baltimore, and I could swear I have seen the young teen at the College Fair earlier this year, it pains me to know that.
As a gay man, I am trying to think about whether or not this was really a hate crime. What if the rapist was gay, but had slipped into some state of anger and lost it? What if he was just scared that Jason might tell of the rape? This IS Baltimore and the guy knew his victim. Until details are brought forth, I cannot label this a hate crime.

These types of things just anger me if anything. And I know there will be people out there who will applaud this. All we can do is pray for this family, and keep a very watchful eye for folks the like of the suspect.

What a huge horror to read this… heard about it through Twitter. It seems they’ve lost a beautifull soul… R.I.P. Jason! Thinking of you all the way from the Netherlands…

I rarely comment to any stories that I read online, but this has truly upset me. Let me first begin by saying that I too am a gay man, and I highly DETEST anyone who commits a crime against a weaker individual. As a christian, it’s so hard not to wish harm on Mr. Parrish, so I just pray that our justice system will punish him accordingly, and most of all…that GOD gets Jason’s vengeance.
If I may respond to one of the comments above…Thomas, why does it matter “what” type of crime this is? The “hate” in hate-crime is just an adjective that describes or modifies the type of crime…at the end of the day, we still have a 35-year old man who took the life of this young 15-year old man, and that is a CRIME.
I send up sincere and heart-felt prayers and condolences for the Mattison, and though you may not have Jason with you in the flesh, the memories of him will live forever.
Jason, rest well my brotha…save a seat for me.

What a shockingly sad story and how proud Jason Mattison’s family must be that he lived his life confidently and openly.
My thoughts are with his family.

I think that’s wrong for someone that is supposed to be apart of a family that everyone trust killed a 15 year old boy because he’s not afraid to show his sexually to the world and being proud to be the person that he is that man need to stay in jail for life because that boy didn’t get a chance to live life or really experience it yet and for someone to do that they don’t need a other chance in life at all my wishes go out to the family ……
