The West Hollywood City Council plans to unveil a plaque in honor of gay marriage, inscribed with a quote from continued activist and former South African president Nelson Mandela. The plaque will be unveiled at its meeting on September 8th and then permanently installed at West Hollywood Park off North San Vicente Blvd. The plaque will read: “I am not truly free if I am taking away someone else’s freedom, just as surely as I am not free when my freedom is taken from me. The oppressed and the oppressor alike are robbed of their humanity.”
West Hollywood Park was the site where many same-sex couples exchanged vows back in June 2008, when they were legally able to marry in California, before the passage of Prop 8.
South Africa legalized gay marriage back in November 2006.
